Maintaining a heat pump / air conditioner is no different to maintaining other equipment you rely on, like a motor vehicle, which requires regular inspections and maintenance to perform at its best. Regardless of the season, having a heat pump / air conditioning system that is working efficiently and effectively makes living easier and provides peace of mind.

Cleaning the filters in your heat pump / air conditioner helps improve air quality and system efficiency. A well-maintained system will deliver cool or hot air efficiently into a room and can help keep power bills in check.

To ensure your heat pump / air conditioning system is performing at its best and continues to provide the optimal indoor comfort, Fujitsu General recommends the following maintenance and operating tips.

  1. Clean the dust on the filter: at the end of every season use a vacuum cleaner, or mild detergent and warm water, to remove sediment that has built up on the filter. Allow the filter to dry thoroughly before replacing it. Refer to the manufacturer’s operating manual on how to access and remove the filter from the indoor unit.

  2. Keep the outdoor unit free from debris and obstructions: like with indoor units, debris can build-up on the outdoor unit fins, restricting airflow. This can cause the compressor to work harder, leading to higher energy usage and increased running costs.

  3. Clean the indoor unit grilles: dust also accumulates along the grilles of the indoor unit. Every six months or so gently vacuum along the grooves or wipe with a damp cloth for efficient air flow.

  4. Use built in programmers and features to reduce energy output: on particularly hot days, use program timers to start the heat pump / air conditioner before the temperature gets too hot. Switching the heat pump / air conditioner on during the hottest part of the day means it needs to work much harder and takes longer to cool down the home. Many Wall Mounted Fujitsu heat pump / air conditioners also have a clever human sensor feature that automatically switches the system to energy saving mode when no movement is detected within the room for 20 minutes.

  5. Don’t be tempted to set the temperature too low: selecting the coldest setting will not cool the home faster, and can use unnecessary power usage for minimal comfort gains. Fujitsu recommends setting the heat pump / air conditioner above 23 degrees Celsius to create a comfortable environment whilst minimising energy consumption.

  6. Have the heat pump / air conditioner professionally serviced: periodically a licensed heat pump / air conditioning technician should visit the home for a system check-up. A professional service is recommended every one to two years, depending on usage, to ensure the system operates as smoothly as possible.
