What is the Warmer Kiwi Homes Program?

Designed to make heating easier and more affordable, Warmer Kiwi Homes provides grants to help eligible homeowners to get the insulation and energy-efficient heating they need, especially in colder regions and for older properties that lack proper insulation.

What Does Warmer Kiwi Homes NZ Cover?

The program covers a significant portion of the installation costs for approved heat pumps or insulation upgrades. It provides grants for ceiling and underfloor insulation, as well as approved energy-efficient heating systems such as heat pumps. If you're living in an older, under-insulated house or just want to reduce your energy bills, upgrading your home has never been easier.

Warmer Kiwi Homes Eligibility

To qualify, homeowners must meet certain eligibility criteria, and the heating systems they choose must meet EECA’s energy efficiency standards. You’ll also be glad to know that Fujitsu is a top choice among Warmer Kiwi Homes providers. There are two grants available in the scheme:

Insulation Grant

The insulation grant offers eligible homeowners up to 80–90% off ceiling and underfloor insulation costs. Homeowner eligibility includes:

  • You must own and live in a home built before 2008.

  • You (the owner) must have a Community Services Card or live in an area identified as low-income. 

  • Your home doesn’t have ceiling and underfloor insulation.

  • If you’ve had an insulation grant for a previous house, you can apply for a grant at your current property.  

Once insulation is installed, homeowners may also be eligible to apply for a Warmer Kiwi Homes heating grant.

Heater Grant

Similar to the insulation grant, the heater grant covers up to 80% of the cost of an approved heat pump. Approved heaters must be powerful and cost-effective to run. Homeowner eligibility includes:

  • You must own and live in a home built before 2008.

  • You (the owner) must have a Community Services Card or live in an area identified as low-income.

  • You must have ceiling and underfloor insulation installed to EECA standards.

  • Your home doesn’t have an operational fixed heater in any living area of the house.

  • If your home has a heat pump, wood or pellet burner, fluid gas heater or central heating system, you will NOT be eligible for a heating grant.

How to Apply for the Warmer Kiwi Homes NZ Grant?

Applying for a Warmer Kiwi Homes grant is simple and worthwhile. Here’s a step-by-step guide to how the process works:

Fill out the application form to check out your eligibility

Start by heading to the official Warmer Kiwi Homes website, where you'll find an easy-to-use application form. You'll need to provide some basic details about your home, including its address, year of construction and whether you hold a Community Services Card or live in a qualifying area. Once submitted, the site will let you know if you're eligible for an insulation grant, a heater grant or both.

Home assessment and quote

If you're eligible, local Warmer Kiwi Homes providers will contact you to arrange a free in-home assessment. During this visit, they’ll inspect your existing insulation or heating setup, check what’s needed and provide a detailed quote for the recommended upgrades. Remember to ask your installer for Fujitsu products during their visit. Your quote will include your grant discount, so you’ll know exactly what your out-of-pocket cost will be.

Installation

Simply accept the quote and your service provider will schedule a professional installation. Whether you're getting a heat pump installation, or new insulation fitted, the process is usually quick and minimally disruptive. Installers are EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes-approved and trained to ensure that the products meet the program’s high standards for energy efficiency and safety.
