FAQs: Maintenance

There is an odour coming from my heat pump / air con. What should I do?

By Kyle Rafter - August 19, 2021

If you are experiencing an odour you suspect is coming from your unit, firstly check to see if your return air filters are clean and if not, we suggest removing and cleaning them to see if that resolves the issue.

You should also take into consideration the location of your unit. Your heat pump / air conditioner draws in air from the space it is operating in which means that smells such as cooking food can occur if the unit is installed in, or nearby, a kitchen.

Another possible reason for potential odour is the moisture that condensates on the indoor coil can absorb smells from the surrounding environment. If it does not drain away properly and sits in the drain tray for too long, it can start to smell.

It is recommended that you have a service carried out on your heat pump / air conditioner every 12-24 months (depending on the usage and environment) which can include a coil and drain tray clean/treatment.
