What Does ‘Auto Mode’ Mean in Air Conditioners / Heat Pumps?

By Kyle Rafter - April 17, 2026

When your heat pump / air conditioner is running in auto mode, the system is actively monitoring the room temperature. It selects heating or cooling to reach the chosen temperature set point. As the indoor conditions change throughout the day, the system may switch modes to maintain comfort.

If you prefer a more consistent home air conditioning operation, manually selecting heating or cooling is often the better option.

How Auto Mode Works on an AC / heat pump

Air conditioner / heat pump auto mode automatically adjusts both fan speed and mode to maintain a stable, comfortable indoor environment. Auto mode is ideal if you want consistent comfort and minimal interaction with the controls.

One key advantage of setting your heat pump / AC on auto mode is potential energy savings. The total amount of energy saved in auto mode depends on your home’s conditions and usage habits. By fine-tuning its operation, the system avoids overshooting the temperature or running harder than necessary, reducing potential wasted energy.

A heat pump / air conditioner in auto mode is designed to react to real-time room conditions, by preventing unnecessary mode switching which lowers the compressor workload. This is especially beneficial during mild or changeable weather, when manual settings often result in overheating or overcooling.

While heat pump auto mode may not be ideal in extreme temperatures, it supports a smoother and more efficient operation, helping lower energy use over time. For more ways to reduce running costs and save energy, see our guide on How to Use Heat Pumps / Air Conditioners Efficiently.

How to Operate General Airstage Heat Pump Auto Mode

Using General Airstage (formerly Fujitsu)  heat pump auto mode is simple and designed to maximise home comfort with minimal effort. Just follow these steps:

  • Press the Mode button on your remote until ‘Auto’ appears.

  • Once selected, the system automatically chooses heating or cooling based on the room temperature and your preferred set point. General Airstage’s intelligent controls also adjust fan speed and airflow to maintain stable comfort without constant manual changes.

The auto mode on your air conditioner / heat pump is ideal for homes with fluctuating temperatures or for anyone who prefers a ‘set-and-forget’ approach. For even better efficiency, pair auto mode with features like sleep or the built-in human sensor on select models.
