How To Clean My Heat Pump / Air Conditioner Unit

By Kyle Rafter - December 16, 2025

Depending on which residential heat pump / air conditioner you have, there are several ways to clean it properly. Generally, you should check that the vents and filters are clear of dust and debris at least once a month if you use it daily or every three months if you use it less often. Also, check to see if the filters need washing or replacing.

Regularly cleaning your heat pump / air conditioner means that the unit will heat and cool more effectively, improves indoor air quality and be more energy efficient.

How To Clean a Fujitsu Heat Pump / Air Conditioner Outdoor Unit

If you’re wondering how to clean the heat pump outdoor unit safely, simply follow these steps:

  • First, ensure the heat pump power is off at the isolator switch for safety.

  • Remove any leaves, grass or twigs caught in or around the unit. You can use a soft brush or a low-pressure hose to gently wash away dirt from the exterior panels and coil fins. Avoid using high-pressure water or harsh cleaning chemicals.

  • Ensure there’s at least 30–50 centimetres of clear space around the outdoor heat pump / air conditioning unit. Trim any nearby plants or shrubs.

Learning how to clean the AC unit's inside parts is also important:

  • Start by turning off the system. Open the front panel of your indoor unit to access the air filters.

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the inside surfaces of the front panel and the air outlet. Don’t spray cleaning products directly into the unit, as you may damage the sensitive components.

  • Once the main section is clean, carefully remove the air filters and vacuum or rinse with lukewarm water to remove any dust or debris.

  • Make sure the filters are completely dry before reinstalling into the heat pump / air conditioner.

If you notice a musty smell, visible mould, or dust build-up inside the system when cleaning an air conditioner unit, book a professional service with a qualified technician who can perform a thorough clean and check the internal coils, fan and drainage system.
